EVENT DETAILS

Dear Recipient:

We are delighted to announce the Bayou Preservation Association (BPA) 15th annual Symposium on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at the United Way of Greater Houston from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm. The Symposium will highlight  how we are faring since Harvey and how we plan to respond going forward to minimize similar impacts.

Over the years, the Symposium has addressed pertinent issues of bayou preservation and use; including water quality, riparian buffers, trash free bayous, low impact development, watershed sustainability, and outdoor recreation.  This year, we’ll hear from local agencies and others groups on how we ‘stay awake’ after the Harvey wake-up call and candidly explore options to avoid a similar disaster.  We will examine existing programs such as buyouts, channel improvements and new construction regulations; as well as less discussed options, like basin to basin transfers, more regional detention and channel restoration.

These decisions impact our citizens but also our area bayous; not only as the backbone of our drainage system but also from a preservation and restoration perspective.  Our community deserves the best possible solution; can we ask the hard questions to achieve it?  To contribute to the discussion, we have invited representatives from Harris County, Harris County Flood Control District and the City of Houston; as well as the Houston Flood Mitigation Consortium.  Eric Berger, a Houston-based meteorologist with Space City Weather, will provide our keynote address, “What’s Up with the Weather”.

Please join us in ‘staying awake’ by becoming a partnering sponsor for this professional education event.  As a sponsor, your company is entitled to a range of benefits, as outlined on the attached form and on the Bayou Preservation Association website. Sponsors at the $2,000 level and above have the opportunity to attend a VIP breakfast prior to the event with elected officials and other community leaders.

The Symposium has become a sought-after event among key policy makers, planners, scientists and engineers who value the expertise presented throughout the day. About 200 individuals attend each year to learn about emerging water quality issues and to discuss possible solutions. Organizing partners this year are AECOM; EHRA Engineering, Inc.; Freese & Nichols, Inc.; Harris County; City of Houston; Houston-Galveston Area Council; and, Memorial Park Conservancy.

We appreciate your consideration and look forward to your partnership and attendance at this timely salute to our watersheds and exploration of ways to continue to effectively manage and enjoy them.

Sincerely,

BAYOU PRESERVATION ASSOCIATION
